Keeping the radiator clear of curtains and furniture

A radiator works by letting warm air rise and circulate freely around the room, and anything that blocks that airflow reduces how well it can do its job. Long curtains draped over the top, or a sofa pushed right up against it, are two of the most common culprits found in many living rooms. The problem is easy to miss, because the furniture and curtains were usually put in place long before anyone thought about how the heating would cope.

Curtains that hang down in front of a radiator trap warm air behind the fabric instead of letting it spread into the room. Tucking them behind the radiator, or choosing a shorter length that ends just above the windowsill, allows the warmth to reach the rest of the room far more easily. If the curtains are long and you would rather keep them, tie them back during the day so that they hang clear of the heat. In the evening, drawing them across the window while keeping them off the radiator gives you the best of both.

Furniture placement matters too

Sofas, bookcases and other large pieces placed directly against a radiator soak up much of the warm air before it ever leaves the wall. Leaving a gap between the furniture and the radiator lets air circulate properly, which noticeably improves how warm the room feels overall. Leather and wooden pieces also cope better with some distance from a source of warmth, since constant heat can dry them out over time.

Dust and fluff that collect behind and beneath a radiator can affect how well it performs. A long, thin brush or a vacuum crevice tool, used every so often, keeps the area clear. It is also worth running a soft brush along the top of the radiator, where fluff tends to settle. Do this only when the heating is switched off and the metal has cooled, so that you do not burn your hand.

With curtains tucked away and furniture kept a sensible distance from the radiator, a room heats up more evenly and comfortably. These small adjustments cost nothing and take only a few minutes, yet they make a real difference to comfort on a chilly evening.
